After Gemma came out of work, she was referred to Torus foundation for help to get her back on track.
The team soon realised Gemma had good, solid work experience behind her, although it was important to find a role that was flexible and could fit round her family needs.
Unclear of her job goal and the limited availability for training, Gemma wasn’t sure where to start. Not only was Gemma linked to a plan with the Employment and Skills Team but, she was also introduced to the Financial Inclusion Team who offered utilities guidance and support.
Looking at Gemma’s training and flexible employment opportunities, the team spoke to Gemma about the Government’s new SWAP initiatives, which were sector specific, consisting of short training course and followed swiftly by an interview.
As Gemma had good IT skills, the team focused on moving her onto an admin/homeworking SWAP initiative, an ideal match for her childcare needs over the holiday period. A chance to utilise her skills and abilities, and enable her to return to the workplace with a fairly good rate of pay.
Together they also developed a commercial CV in order to be able to promote Gemma more effectively upon the CV platforms and be more proactive in her job search strategy.
Gemma impressed with her training performance and attendance and was given a homebased SWAP opportunity for which she has now started.
Employment and Skills Advisor Joan explains, “Gemma will flourish in this environment, as she is still able to be a hands on Mum, while also being the sole breadwinner too.
“Although Gemma was always keen to get back into work, we knew it had to be the right role to work round her needs. Had she rushed back into any role with more demands on her time, this would have impacted on sustainability more long term and ultimately could have impacted on Gemma’s overall health and wellbeing trying to cope with it all on her own.
“Homeworking is the future for Gemma and we know she will flourish in the role.”
Gemma adds, “I want to thank Torus Foundation so much for all your time, help and compassion. This year wasn’t the best for me and you helped me to get up and onto my feet and back into the working world. I know it took some time and there were times I felt like giving up, but having you behind me gave me the confidence and belief to do it.
“I just want you to know I will be forever grateful for your phone calls and always keeping in touch. You helped me more than anyone with your great advice and listening ear and your constant support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
